Safety and Disposal
All broken glassware and used pipettes should be placed in the proper glass disposal box. All chemicals should be disposed of in proper waste containers and not dumped down the drain. Always consult the MSDS data for each chemical to be used. Glutaraldehyde and osmium tetroxide are very toxic and should always be kept under a fume hood.

To neutralize osmium tetroxide:
- Pour corn oil into the osmium tetroxide solution. Use twice the amount of oil as osmium tetroxide.
- Wait for the oil to turn black.
- To confirm neutralization, suspend either a glass coverslip coated with corn oil or filter paper coated with corn oil. If the oil turns black, osmium tetroxide is present.
- Dispose in accordance with local regulations.
